Hank Williams, Jr. had a mighty long shadow to come out from underneath. Son of the legendary Hank Williams Sr., one of the most hallowed names in country music and a forerunner to the massive industry that exists today, Hank Jr. started his career as his father’s impersonator, singing his father’s songs onstage from the tender age of eight.
One of the privileges of being Hank Williams’ son was the assortment of talented visitors stopping by to share tricks of the trade including Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash and Fats Domino. Hank Jr. became a multi-instrumentalist, skilled on the guitar, bass, banjo, harmonica, keyboards, drums and fiddle. Tragedy struck in 1975 when Williams fell while mountain-climbing. After a two-year-long recovery period, a new Hank Williams, Jr. emerged to take on the Country music establishment and his own past persona. Williams’s own style of Country rock emerged and he stormed the charts, producing two album a year at times, winning Grammys and moving loads of Hank Williams Jr. tickets.
