About the National Finals Rodeo
The National Finals Rodeo is an annual championship event to determine the world champion in each of the rodeo’s seven main events. Organized by the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association, the first NFR was held in Dallas, Texas in 1959. Today, Las Vegas is the host of the 10-day event, bringing more than 170,000 fans annually to UNLV’s Thomas & Mack Center. Wrangler became the first title sponsor of the championship in 2001.
As the final rodeo event of the year, world championship titles are awarded at the end of the NFR to those who earned the most money in his or her event that year. The highest-earning cowboy who has competed in multiple events throughout the year is dubbed, "World All-Around Rodeo Champion Cowboy," quite an honor to be sure, and you can be there to see 2017's winner crowned as well.
A winner is also crowned for each event in the NFR. The events at the NFR include:
- Bareback riding
- Saddle bronc riding
- Steer wrestling
- Team roping, divided into Headers (cowboys who rope the steer’s head) and Heelers (those who rope the steer’s heel)
- Tie-down roping (or calf roping)
- Bull riding
- Barrel racing
Each event of the NPR has its own prizes, as well as prizes for the best combined results over the championship, known as “the average.”
