About Mariah Carey

Mariah Carey started singing at a young age. The daughter of a former opera singer and voice teacher, she soon decided to dedicate her life to music. Mariah was writing her own songs by junior high and missed several days of high school whilst working as a demo singer for local recording studios. Eventually, she got her break when Columbia Recods executive, Tony Mattola, met her at a party and signed her to a recording contract. Mariah later married Mattola. This story helped launch a successful career and she took the music industry by storm, winning Grammy Awards for Best New Artist and Best Female Vocal Performance. Her career continued on an upward trajectory for several years, but she would fall on hard times. Mariah and Mattola divorced, and she entered the hospital in 2001.

After struggling for a couple of years, Mariah Carey broke back onto the scene in 2003, contributing vocals to Busta Rhymes' "I Know What You Want." In 2005, Mariah released The Emancipation of Mimi, which was considered her "comeback album" and met with popular and critical acclaim, re-solidifying her place as one of today's premier pop divas. Her hit single "We Belong Together" became the 2nd longest-running No. 1 song in U.S. chart history. After the release of her next album E=MC² in 2008, Mariah met comedian Nick Cannon on the set of her music video for "Bye Bye" and the two soon married. The pair were divorced in 2016. The following year Mariah released Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel, which also met with positive reviews, and its lead single "Obsessed" peaked at No. 7 on the Billboard Hot 100. In 2010, Mariah released a Christmas album titled Merry Christmas II You, featuring a re-recording of her hit "All I Want For Christmas Is You."

In 2011, Mariah gave birth to fraternal twins named Monroe and Moroccan. She recorded duets with famous singers like Tony Bennett, Justin Bieber, and John Legend. Her first performance after the pregnancy was in New York's Gotham Hall in 2012, and later that year she wrote and sang "Bring It On Home" in support of the election of President Barack Obama in New York's Plaza Hotel. Mariah also joined season twelve of American Idol as a judge along with Keith Urban, Randy Jackson, and Nicki Minaj. After her stint on American Idol and her performance in the acclaimed film, Lee Daniel's The Butler, Mariah decided it was time to hit the recording studio again. Me. I Am Mariah... The Elusive Chanteuse was released in 2014, featuring the hit single "#Beautiful."
