William Shatner is without a doubt a cultural icon. This charming and charismatic actor has a stage and screen career spanning over half a century. He began as a classically trained actor in Canada and was already treading the Broadway stage by 1956 in Tamburlaine the Great. After a few more years of theatre, including the Broadway production of The World of Suzie Wong, film, including The Brothers Karamazov, and television work, including Alfred Hitchcock Presents, Shatner was cast in a pilot for the seminal science fiction series Star Trek. He played the Starship Enterprise's fearless leader Captain James T. Kirk from 1966 until the series' cancellation in 1969. The series was a modest success, but its real notoriety came when a cult following developed from its syndication in the 1970s. Devoted "Trekkies" began idolizing Shatner and the rest of the show's cast, lining up to see them at conventions.

From 1979 to 1994, Shatner reprised his role as Captain Kirk in several movies that were made to capitalize on the Star Trek's resurging and enduring popularity. Since Shatner's time with the show, there have been other television series that have kept the Star Trek franchise alive, as well as a successful 2009 film featuring an all-new cast. But die-hard fans of the original series still see Shatner as the one and only Star Trek superstar. Since Star Trek, Shatner's other memorable projects include the starring role on the 1980s cop show T.J. Hooker and the role of Denny Crane on The Practice and subsequently Boston Legal, for which he won two Emmy Awards and a Golden Globe. He also appeared as "The Big Giant Head" on 3rd Rock from the Sun, has been a guest on many talk shows, and has done endorsement deals, most notably with Priceline.com.
