The band was formerly known as “The Jakes” and signed to Roadrunner Records in 2009. In 2009, Young the Giant song “Texas Tea” was played on an episode of MTV’s Real World: Brooklyn and another song, “Paid the Piper” was played on A&E’s The Beast. In 2010, Young the Giant toured with Minus the Bear and Steel Train while working on their first album, and after the release, continued to play with other artists like Marina and the Diamonds, The Futureheads, Neon Trees and New Politics. A few songs were leaked before the release of the album, including “My Body,” “I Got,” and “Strings.” Young the Giant performed songs from their debut album for an episode of MTV Unplugged in 2011 and released a music video for new track "West Virginia" in January 2012.
After the release of Young the Giant’s first album, Amazon.com called it the third best rock album of 2010 and the first single “My Body” peaked at number 5 on the Billboard Alternative Songs chart. The song was featured on American Idol and Young the Giant performed “My Body” on Jimmy Kimmel Live in 2011. Young the Giant played the Sasquatch Music Festival and The Great Escape Festival later in the year. Young the Giant’s second single was “Cough Syrup” and they played on the main stage at Lollapalooza in August. Since then, they dropped their second album Mind over Matter. Two years later, they dropped Home of the Strange in 2016. They are touring in support of their third album.
