The world didn’t know it needed a clownish, rapping, South Korean satirist but that’s what it decided when it pushed Park Jae-sang’s YouTube sensation “Gangnam Style” to be the most viewed and “liked” video of all time. Jae-sang’s video beat out such global goliaths as Justin Bieber's "As Long as You Love Me" and Katy Perry's "Wide Awake, signaling the arrival of a new international talent.
Jae-sang, better known as PSY, made his name the old-fashioned way in South Korea, through controversy. Initially nicknamed “Bizarre Singer” because of his strange lyrics, appearance and dance moves, PSY’s second album Ssa 2 was banned to fans under 19 years of age for its provocative content, but they still flocked to PSY tour dates.
By the time his sixth album came around, PSY’s decision to do things his way finally paid off on the ridiculously viral clip for “Gangnam Style” which has led to a contract with Justin Bieber’s manager, appearances on The Ellen DeGeneres Show where he taught Britney Spears to Gangnam and intense speculation about forthcoming PSY tour dates in America.
