The Gypsy Kings began their career in the 1970s as a street band in Arles, France, birthplace of Vincent Van Gogh and his hyper realistic impressions. Maybe there’s something in the water. The Gypsy Kings appear to be channeling the Dutch master with their own unique impressions, most notably the Rumba Catalana, a pop-styled flamenco popular with the salsa set that has brought the band international stardom and sold scores of Gypsy Kings concert tickets.
Flamenco runs in the family for these musicians. Popular flamenco artist Jose Reyes is the father of Gypsy Kings Nicolas and Andre Reyes and their cousins, band members Jacques, Maurice, and Tonino Baliardo are the sons of the Gitano flamenco guitarist Manitas de Plata (little silver hands).
The Gypsy Kings were discovered by producer Claude Martinez who elevated them to global stardom. Their first self-titled album features singles Djobi Djoba, Bamboleo and Un Amor and spent 40 weeks on the American charts, rare for a Spanish language album, and their flamenco-flavored cover of Hotel California proved memorable in the Coen Brothers masterpiece The Big Lebowski. The band also recorded a flamenco cover of You’ve Got a Friend in Me in Spanish for Toy Story 3. Gypsy Kings concert tickets are available through TicketLiquidator!
