The Joffrey Ballet is one of the United States' premier dance companies. Aside from having a reputation for staging some of the most beautiful performances with some of the most skilled dancers in the world, it has been a trailblazer for American dance since its creation in 1956. In a time when touring companies were performing only abridged versions of classics, founders Gerald Arpino and Robert Joffrey formed a unique troupe that performed original ballets created by Joffrey himself. Continuing in that tradition of innovation, the Joffrey Ballet has been labeled "America's Company of Firsts;" it was the first dance company to perform at the White House (at the invitation of Jacqueline Kennedy), the first to appear on television, the first to utilize multi-media features in performance, the first to create a ballet to rock music, the first to appear on the cover of Time magazine, and the first to have a feature film based on it (The Company, directed by Robert Altman). It even broke ground internationally, becoming the first American dance company to perform a rock ballet in Russia as well as bringing the first American rock band ever to perform there.
With such a rich historical legacy, the Joffrey Ballet has reached the ultimate level of prestige in the American and international dance world. It currently performs a regular season (from October to May) at Roosevelt University's Auditorium Theatre in Chicago as well as several U.S. and international tours each year. The company's repertoire consists of classical and modern ballet standards as well as original works, and each December it presents the beloved classic The Nutcracker, in partnership with the diverse and innovative Chicago Sinfonietta.
