About Florence + the Machine

Born Florence Leontine Mary Welch, she is the rock and soul goddess best known as the front woman and namesake for Florence and the Machine. After a temporary break up with her boyfriend, Florence wrote most of the material that premiered on her debut album Lungs including Florence and the Machine hits Kiss with a Fist, Dog Days Are Over, Drumming Song, Candi Station and You've Got The Love.

Florence + the Machine’s singles have been featured on hit television shows The Vampire Diaries, Grey's Anatomy, V, Gossip Girl, Glee and So You Think You Can Dance as well as in the films The Twilight Saga: Eclipse and Eat, Pray, Love. The band has opened for Blur, Duran Duran, White Lies, Friendly Fires and Glasvegas, and during their tour with MGMT, Florence and the Machine tickets were hard to come by.

In 2011, Florence was working on material with Drake for his new album and the band were scheduled to open for U2 on the North American leg of their 360 Tour. The band also lent its song Cosmic Love to the Four Paws campaign in EU to ban the sale of animal-tested cosmetics. Florence + the Machine Meet Arcade Fire

In a recent video interview with Nylon TV, Florence Welsh talks about growing up, crowdsurfing and meeting Win Butler of Arcade Fire. In the video, Welsh owns up to being so starstruck at meeting a band that she loved so much she broke into tears. In a wistful aside, she expresses her admiration for Arcade Fire and their now classic album Funeral.

Florence + the Machine Talk Lungs Follow-Up

In addition to the recent Florence and the Machine tour dates underway, the follow-up to Florence and the Machine's critically acclaimed Lungs is in the works and lead singer Florence Welch spoke recently about the themes and metaphors that are guiding the writing. Welch attributed inspiration for the new album to certain imaginary things in her life, like ghosts and dreams and rumors...and her dead grandmother. If you can't see her on tour, check her out backstage in a new video up at NME.

Florence + the Machine Inspire Beyonce

In a recent interview, Beyonce said that she listened to Florence and the Machine while she was in the process of recording her new album 4. Other influences included Florence's fellow Brit Adele, Earth, Wind & Fire, Lionel Richie, the Jackson 5 and Debarge. Sounds like it might be a motown record, although Run the World (Girls) feels more like a Brazilian/West Indies mash-up (though those soulful mini breakdowns throughout the song might foreshadow the rest of the album). In a separate interview, Florence Welch cited Janis Joplin as one of her influences and admires the artist's lack of restraint on stage and the deep "suffering and intensity" she endured during her regular life.

Florence + the Machine Working on Follow-Up

Despite leaving the Grammys empty-handed, Florence Welsh of Florence and the Machine made her presence known during the all-female tribute to Aretha Franklin. With her first album Lungs in the can, Florence is at work on her next album and releasing behind the scenes videos online. The Florence and Machine tour bus starts up again in June, be sure to pick up your Florence + the Machine tickets.
