We Will Rock You is the megahit jukebox musical featuring the legendary songs of Queen. Along with the title track, the long list of classic songs includes "Somebody to Love," "Under Pressure," "Crazy Little Thing Called Love," "Another One Bites the Dust," "We Are the Champions," and the extraordinary "Bohemian Rhapsody." The story is set in a virtually post-apocalyptic world in which rock music is a lost treasure and the oppressive government will do anything to keep a foretold chosen one from bringing it back and putting power back into the hands of the people. The creative costumes range from the sterile, clean-cut ensembles of the brainwashed masses to the punk-ish threads of the Bohemian vagabond revolutionaries to the elaborate outfits of the glamorous but evil Killer Queen. And wildly imagined, futuristic sets and powerful choreography captivate audiences in this hardcore musical experience.
Originally debuting in London in 2002, We Will Rock You has enjoyed much popular success. Despite some negative critical reception, it has proven to be an audience favorite. In May, 2011, it celebrated its ninth anniversary at London's Dominion Theatre, a significant accomplishment since it is one of the largest venues in the West End, seating 2,000 people. Several foreign productions have since launched, including ones in Australia, Spain, Russia, Japan, South Africa, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, The Netherlands, France, Canada, Germany, Sweden, Denmark, and Norway. 300 years in the future, Earth is a dystopian world renamed "Planet Mall," and is ruled over by the Globalsoft Corporation. Everyone is brainwashed into conforming to the majority, listening to the same music, watching the same shows, wearing the same clothes, and even bearing the same mindsets and opinions. The biggest tragedy, though, is that rock music is completely lost and musical instruments are outlawed.
Galileo is a recent graduate who has strange dreams and, though he doesn't know their meaning, hears messages that are actually lyrics of lost songs. When he refuses to conform, he is captured by Khashoggi, leader of the police, along with a young, gothic woman who also finds herself to be an outsider. Meanwhile, Killer Queen, the ruler of Globalsoft, hears of a prophecy that hidden musical instruments are fated to be discovered somewhere on the planet, bringing back the dangerous rock music, so she mounts a comprehensive search to destroy the instruments before they threaten to loosen her stranglehold on Planet Mall.
When Galileo and the young woman, who he has named Scaramouche, wake up together in a hospital, they flee to the streets, where they meet wandering Bohemians Brit and Meat, who have been gathering supplies to build musical instruments. Brit believes that there is a "Dreamer" who will fulfill the prophecy and bring true music back to the planet. When Galileo begins reciting lines of a "secret text" that he insists he has only ever heard in his head, Brit tests him by singing a few lines of a lost song ("Bohemian Rhapsody"). When Galileo responds with the correct following lines, Brit know he is the Dreamer of the prophecy.
Back at the Heartbreak Hotel, the home base for the Bohemians, Brit, Meat, and their comrades explain that they take their names from singers of the lost past and mourn the loss of those who died young. They then celebrate the reason that the rock musicians of the past played in the first place, love. When Khashoggi and his police turn up at the Heartbreak Hotel, they attempt to capture the Bohemian rebels, resulting in a bloody battle from which Galileo and Scaramouche manage to escape. Can these two young visionaries find the instruments of legend and fulfill the prophecy while the watchful eyes of the Killer Queen and the relentless pursuit of Khashoggi and his minions threaten their quest?
