Phil Lesh Tour Schedule

Phil Lesh began his musical career as a violinist before switching over to trumpet in high school. Lesh's interests were mostly in avant-garde classical music and free jazz. In college, Lesh would meet future band-mate Jerry Garcia in College; Garcia would eventually convince Lesh to become bassist in the now legendary rock and jam group The Grateful Dead, initially known as Warlocks.

Surprisingly, Phil Lesh never played the bass before joining the band and cites his influences as Bach counterpoint instead of traditional rhythm section roles typically taken by bassists. Prior to innovators like Lesh, the bass guitar normally played the role of timekeeper for a song's beat. Innovators like Lesh began using the bass to improvise and stray from the underlying beat of the song. Some have said Lesh's bass was as much a lead instrument as Jerry Garcia's.

The Grateful Dead, formed in San Francisco during the mid 60s, was one of the pioneers in the rock fusion genre combining such categories as reggae, country, jazz, psychedelia folk, rock, bluegrass, space rock and blues. They were also one of the founding fathers of jam music of the rock variety employing techniques of musical improvisation. The Grateful Dead would receive a cult following of fans willing to tour with the band. Lead singer Jerry Garcia would pass of a heart attack in 1995.

A few years later, Phil Lesh would go on to form Phil Lesh and Friends with a revolving lineup of musicians including members of Phish, Zen Tricksters and Little Feat. Citing Bob Dylan, The Beatles, Led Zeppelin and the Allman Brothers Band as influences, Phil Lesh and friends incorporates southern rock and faster-paced hard rock. Like the Grateful Dead, droves of fans set out to buy Phil Lesh tickets to all dates of the Phil Lesh & Friends tours taking advantage of the opportunity to record and share live footage. The Dead, formed in 2003 as an extension of The Other Ones and The Grateful Dead with members Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, Mickey Hart, Bill Kreutzmann, Jeff Chimenti and Warren Haynes. The band released on album "The Strange Remain" and hit the number on spot on Billboards Top Heatseekers chart.
