Based in Seattle, Washington, the Pacific Northwest Ballet (PNB) was founded in 1972 as part of the Seattle Opera. Breaking out on its own in 1977, it quickly became one of the foremost ballet companies in the nation under the guidance of founding artistic directors Kent Stowell and Francia Russell, both of whom had studied with the great George Balanchine. Upon their departure in 2005, Peter Boal stepped in and took the reins. The Pacific Northwest Ballet is said to have the country's highest per-capita attendance, with a whopping 11,000 subscribers. It is also the home of the Pacific Northwest Ballet School (founded in 1974), one of the leading, if not the ultimate, professional ballet training schools in the United States.
This prestigious ballet company has got a very impressive repertory, featuring the music of many varied composers such as Igor Stravinsky, Richard Strauss, Peter Tchaikovsky, Georges Bizet, Richard Rodgers, Frederic Chopin, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Philip Glass, Felix Mendelssohn, Richard Wagner, Jerome Kern, Jules Massenet, and George Gershwin. It also presents the work of great choreographers such as Twyla Tharp, Jerome Robbins, George Balanchine, Jose Limon, Marius Petipa, Bruce Wells, Ulysses Dove, Trisha Brown, Susan Stroman, and founder Kent Stowell. And thankfully, these amazing performances can be seen not only in Seattle but on tour throughout the United States and overseas.
