The stage version of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe is based on the novel of the same name by C.S. Lewis. The best known book of the fantasy series The Chronicles of Narnia (which also includes The Magician's Nephew, The Horse and His Boy, Prince Caspian: The Return to Narnia, The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, The Silver Chair, and The Last Battle), it follows the story of four children who stumble into a magical realm called Narnia and are charged with fighting for its freedom. In the 2011 Off-Broadway production, two actors use costume pieces and lighting cues to portray multiple roles to tell the story in a highly theatrical way that is accessible to children and adults alike. Its short running time and family-friendly presentation makes it a good theatre choice for small children. When the four young Pevensie children are evacuated from London in 1940, they are sent to live with Professor Digory Kirke at his country home. As Lucy, the youngest, explores the house, she stumbles into a magical wardrobe that transports her to another world called Narnia. There, she meets a faun named Mr. Tumnus, who invites her for tea and tells her of the reign of the White Witch. When she returns to our world, Lucy's siblings don't believe her. But later, her brother Edmund ventures into Narnia and is enchanted by the White Witch, who encourages him to bring his siblings there, where he will rule over them.
Though Edmund protests to his other siblings, Peter and Susan, that Lucy has made it all up, they are all transported to Narnia when they try to hide in the wardrobe. There, they meet Mr. and Mrs. Beaver, who tell them that the White Witch is evil and that the lion Aslan is the true ruler of Narnia. Edmund sneaks away to the alluring White Witch, and when the Beavers realize where he has gone, they quickly abandon their home and embark with the children to find Aslan. They discover that the White Witch's spell of eternal winter is breaking; Father Christmas confirms this information and gives the children gifts: Peter receives a sword and shield; Susan receives a bow and a horn; and Lucy receives a vial of healing liquid. Armed with these new tools, the children finally reach Aslan, but can they really defeat the powerful White Witch who has taken over the kingdom?
