Yo-Yo Ma Concert Tickets |
Yo-Yo Ma is undoubtedly one of the most talented and prolific musicians of our time. His cello performances are unparalleled in skill and beauty, and his career continues to fascinate music lovers all over the world. Born in Paris to Chinese parents in 1955, Yo-Yo Ma began playing musical instruments within a couple of years and settled on the cello as his instrument of choice by age 4. Encouraged by his mother, a singer, and his father, a violinist and professor of music, Ma began playing for audiences by age 5, when his family moved to New York. He even performed for Presidents John F. Kennedy and Dwight D. Eisenhower at age 7. He performed on a televised concert at age 8 and studied at Juilliard at age 9. By 15, he had graduated from New York City's Trinity School and studied under the great Pablo Casals. He eventually enrolled at Harvard University, earning a bachelor's degree. In 1991, Harvard awarded him an honorary doctorate. Ma brings his enormous technical skill to new heights by branching out into new territories and bridging cultural gaps. He currently plays with the Silk Road Ensemble, a group that he started whose goal is to bring together musicians from different countries that were once linked through their connections to the Silk Road. The group promotes intercultural artistic exchange and is currently made up of a loose collective of about 60 musicians and composers. Their inspirational performances can be heard both on recordings and in live shows. Ma's playing style has been described by critics as "omnivorous," meaning that he has a much more eclectic repertoire than most classical musicians. He is quite famous for his performances of Baroque pieces, and he even uses period instruments like his 1733 Montagnana cello and his 1712 Davidoff Stradivarius. But he has also recorded performances of American bluegrass music, traditional Chinese pieces (including the soundtrack for the film Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon), Argentinian tangos, and the music of modern minimalist composer Philip Glass. Order your Yo-Yo Ma tickets today and experience this musical genius' skill first hand. |
