He currently plays with the Silk Road Ensemble, a group that he started whose goal is to bring together musicians from different countries that were once linked through their connections to the Silk Road. The group promotes intercultural artistic exchange and is currently made up of a loose collective of about 60 musicians and composers. Ma's playing style has been described by critics as "omnivorous," meaning that he has a much more eclectic repertoire than most classical musicians. He is quite famous for his performances of Baroque pieces, and he even uses period instruments like his 1733 Montagnana cello and his 1712 Davidoff Stradivarius. But he has also recorded performances of American bluegrass music, traditional Chinese pieces (including the soundtrack for the film Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon), Argentinian tangos, and the music of modern minimalist composer Philip Glass.
