The Wizard of Oz Information
About the Show:
The Wizard of Oz is undoubtedly one of the most well-known and beloved stories of all time. L. Frank Baum's classic Oz books, especially The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (1900) began the history, and the enormously popular 1939 film starring the incomparable Judy Garland catapulted the franchise into the hearts of millions and made the story a cherished piece of Americana (and subsequently and international sensation). The dramatic and heartwarming tale enchants new audiences every day and the stage version brings the excitement up close and personal, so grab your Wizard of Oz tickets now!
In the stage musical, fans can expect all the magic of the film: the vivid costumes, from quaint Munchkin outfits to fabulous Emerald City garb; the lush sets, including the gloomy Haunted Forest and the Wizard's regal palace; and the memorable songs, including "Ding-Dong! The Witch is Dead," "We're Off to See The Wizard," "If I Only Had [a brain, a heart, the nerve]," and of course, "Somewhere Over the Rainbow." The Wizard of Oz is truly a treasure, and now fans can witness its magic live!
On a farm in rural Kansas, young Dorothy lives with her Aunt Em, Uncle Henry, and three farm hands: Hickory, Hunk, and Zeke. When a nasty neighbor, Almira Gulch, is bitten by Dorothy's dog, Toto, she tries to have him destroyed, but Dorothy runs away with him. She meets a traveling fortune teller named Professor Marvel who convinces her to return home by telling her that Aunt Em has taken ill. But on her way home, a tornado strikes. Everyone goes into the storm cellar, but Dorothy is too late; she enters the house and is knocked out by a falling window frame as it is carried into the sky.
When Dorothy awakens, she finds herself in a strange new land. After meeting the diminutive Munchkins and the glamorous Glinda, the Good Witch of the North, she learns that her house has fallen on and killed the Wicked Witch of the East, and her sister, the Wicked Witch of the West, is outraged. The Wicked Witch seeks revenge and the magical ruby slippers that Glinda took from the body of the Witch of the East and gave to Dorothy to protect her. Glinda advises Dorothy that to get back home, she'll need to follow the Yellow Brick Road to the Emerald City and speak to the great Wizard of Oz.
On her way, Dorothy meets three friends: the Scarecrow, who doesn't have a brain; the Tin Man, who doesn't have a heart; and the Cowardly Lion, who doesn't have any courage. They resolve to achieve their desires together by beseeching the Wizard for help. When they finally reach the Emerald City and are admitted to see the Wizard, he appears as a terrifying, disembodied, floating head. He offers to help them but demands that they first kill the Wicked Witch of the West and bring him her broomstick.
The team sets out for the Witch's castle, but she sends her flying monkeys to capture Dorothy and Toto and imprison them in the castle. When the Witch discovers that the slippers can not be removed unless Dorothy dies, she leaves to think about how to accomplish this. Meanwhile, the Scarecrow, Tin Man, and Cowardly Lion sneak into the castle and free Dorothy. After a heated standoff, Dorothy throws a pail of water on the Witch and she melts. They seize the broomstick and head back to the Emerald City.
When they arrive at the Wizard's palace, they discover that he is a fraud who has no real power. But he makes them all see that they have always had the qualities they thought they were missing, as shown by their recent adventures. When the Wizard resolves to return to his home, he agrees to take Dorothy with him, but his hot air balloon flies away before she can board. Thankfully, Glinda appears and tells her that she always had the power to return home, by clicking her heels together and repeating "There's no place like home."
