Considering the enormity of their DC area fan base, it's hard to believe that the Redskins began life playing at Braves Field in
Boston, and then moved to Fenway Park. Bostonian apathy led the owner, George Preston Marshall, to move the team to Washington, and the Redskins blossomed, posting ten consecutive winning records between 1936 and 1945. The team featured a number of stars, including quarterback Sammy Baugh, who led the league in passing six times, punting five times, and interceptions once.
Washington's success then dried up for several years, but their stature began to rise again when they made the Super Bowl in 1973, losing to the Miami Dolphins. The revival was completed when Joe Gibbs was named coach in 1981. The Redskins 2005 record was 10-6, and the Washington men from FedExField began their 2006 preseason with a determined intent to improve on that figure. The Redskins had ended the previous season 20 million dollars above the salary cap, but fortunately the NFL Players' Union agreement raised raised the cap to $102 million dollars in light of lucrative gains due to NFL playoff tickets. Several changes to the roster occurred during the free-agency and draft periods. The Redskins released 3-time Pro Bowl linebacker LaVar Arrington as well as starting safeties Ryan Clark and Matt Bowen, and signed free agents Antwaan Randle El and Brandon Lloyd (wide receivers), tight end Christian Fauria, and strong safety Adam Archuleta.
In the 2006 NFL Draft, the Redskins their first round pick thanks to a 2005 trade used to gain quarterback Jason Campbell, but they traded for the second round to draft Rocky McIntosh out of the University of Miami, a linebacker intended to replace Arrington. The Redskins' next pick was Minnesota's Anthony Montgomery. The remaining picks included, among others, Arizona Guard Kili Lefotu, Georgia's Kedric Golston, and Safety Reed Doughty from Northern Colorado.
The Redskins' 2006 preseason was dire, with a record of 0-4, with losses to the Cincinnati Bengals, the New York Jets, the New England Patriots, and the Baltimore Ravens. A 41-0 trouncing by New England Patriots was the low point, and the picture for the coming season looked bleak. Added to the poor results, starting running back Clinton Portis fell to an injury during preseason, and they bagged the lowest points tally of any team from preseason games.
Washington lost their first two games on the bounce, against Minnesota Vikings and Dallas Cowboys, before they managed to beat Houston Texans 31-15 on the road. Newly acquired free agent Antaan Randle El scored his first touchdown, but the star of the show was Mark Brunell, who set a new NFL record for consecutive completed passes in one game, completing his first 22 pass attempts against the bedraggled Texans' defensive line. Brunell eventually finished 24 of 27 passes, making 269 yards, as well as one touchdown. The following game, they beat the Jaguars 36-30 at FedExField, but then went on a losing streak for three games, as the Giants, Titans, and Colts all beat them consecutively. The rest of the season became a mish-mash of wins and losses, and the Redskins never managed to really gather any positive momentum before the season was finished. They came to rest in fourth spot in the NFC East Division, with little to show for the money and energy they'd spent and with no opportunity to sell Washington Redskins playoff tickets.
