About the Show:

Violet is a musical by Jeanine Tesori and Brian Crawley. It is based on a short story, The Ugliest Pilgrim, written by Doris Betts. It follows the story of a disfigured young woman in the 1960s South searching for a way to heal herself. The score combines elements of blues, gospel, and bluegrass, and includes such songs as "Let It Sing," "Lay Down Your Head," "Bring Me To Light," and "Promise Me, Violet," and "On My Way." The musical premiered off-Broadway in 1997 and received critical praise, including Drama Critics' Circle and Lucille Lortel Awards for Best Musical. A 2014 Broadway production cast musical theatre favorite Sutton Foster (Thoroughly Modern Millie, Anything Goes, TV's Bunheads) in the title role. Plot Synopsis:

1964. Scarred in a terrible childhood accident, 25-year-old Violet Karl boards a Greyhound bus to meet a televangelist in Tulsa, Oklahoma who she believes can heal her disfigured face. At a stop on the way, Violet meets two soldiers: the dashing Monty and Flick, an African-American who often faces discrimination. The group travels together to Memphis, where they visit a dance hall and stay in Flick's friend's hotel after Violet's suitcase is stolen by some mechanics. When Monty stumbles into her room late at night, he falls asleep in her lap and she sings to him.

When Violet finally reaches Tulsa, she interrupts the televangelist in rehearsal, asking him to heal her face. He admits that he can't help her, which leaves Violet feeling betrayed and hurt. She enters a trance in which she confronts her father, who was responsible for her accident, and comes out of it feeling emotionally purged and thinking she has been healed...but has she really? Order Violet tickets to see how Violet copes with her difficulties and where her journey takes her.
