True to its name, the Open Cup is open to all United States Soccer Federation affiliated teams as well as teams from the MLS. Since transportation at the turn of the 20th century limited soccer tournaments to regional events, the U.S. Open Cup was the first truly international soccer cup. The cup changed from being the National Challenge Cup to the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup in 1999, named after one of America’s most important soccer patrons. Eight teams from each level of the American Soccer Pyramid are allowed into the tournament. Since MLS teams have been allowed to compete, they have won every year except one in 1999.
