Urinetown Information

About the Show:

Urinetown is a musical comedy satire by Mark Hollmann and Greg Kotis. Set in a dystopian world where people must pay to use the bathroom, it lampoons capitalism, bureaucracy, politics, and social irresponsibility. Originally a part of the New York Fringe Festival, it was produced off-Broadway in 2001 at the American Theatre for Actors. It transferred to Broadway on September 20 of that year and ran through January 18, 2004, for a total of 25 previews and 965 performances. The original cast featured Hunter Foster (Little Shop of Horrors), Nancy Opel (Memphis), Spencer Kayden (Don't Dress for Dinner), John Cullum (Shenandoah)), and Jennifer Laura Thompson (Nice Work If You Can Get It). Memorable songs from the score include "Too Much Exposition," "Follow Your Heart," and "Run, Freedom, Run!" Buy Urinetown tickets today to take in this clever musical satire live.

Plot Synopsis:

A twenty-year drought has nearly depleted the town's water supply, so nobody has private toilets anymore. In an effort to conserve water, public toilets are offered on a pay-per-use basis by a corporation called Urine Good Company (UGC). If people do not pay to pee, they are sent permanently to a penal colony called Urinetown. But it is soon discovered that this "Urinetown" is much more dangerous than it appears to be.

At the filthiest urinal in town, Assistant Urinal Custodian Bobby Strong works for the ruthless Penelope Pennywise. When Hope Cladwell, daughter of UGC president Caldwell B. Cladwell, meets Bobby, the attraction is instant and the two discuss their hopes for a better world. When it is announced that fees for urinal use will steeply rise, Bobby opens the doors to everyone for free, starting a rebellion. As police arrive, the rebels kidnap Hope and head to the sewers to plan their next move. Order your Urinetown tickets today to see how this thrilling story plays out.
