The United States Grand Prix has been a time honored tradition since 1908 in the world of motor sports. Appearing first in 1908 as the Savannah Automobile Club sponsored American Grand Prize, the race was held in Georgia on a 25.13 mile stock car course on Thanksgiving Day. The race featured fourteen European drivers and six American drivers with the competition coming down to a three-way battle between three European racers, with Louis Wagner being the ultimate victor by a margin of 56 seconds. After the 1908 race, the US Grand Prix event for the following year was scheduled to occur on Long Island but due to complications such as accidents and fan deaths at other similar races such as the Vanderbilt Cup, the race was postponed until 1911, where it was held again in Georgia. In 1912, Milwaukee, Wisconsin became the new location for the Grand Prix, where a narrow 7.88 mile course was set up. However, this event ended in tragedy, when competitor David Bruce-Brown was killed during an event practice ending any chance of the US Grand Prix race returning to Milwaukee for a second year. The race was then held on various tracks throughout California from 1914 until 1916 and tickets for the event were popular on the west coast. In 1916 the Grand Prize was discontinued due to a lack of European participation because of World War I. Between 1923 and 1936, the Grand Prize Trophy was awarded to the winner of the Indianapolis 500 due to it being run to Grand Prix regulations and having a connection to European Racing. For most of the 1950s, the race was included in the World Championship and then in 1958, the race moved to the USAC Road Racing Championship where it was officially billed as the "United States Grand Prix." In 1976, Formula One picked up the event and from then on the event was held on and off in a variety of locations including Long Beach, California, Phoenix, Arizona, Indianapolis, Indiana and ultimately Austin, Texas where it is contracted to be held for the 2014 season and beyond.
