Twelfth Night Information

About the Show:

Twelfth Night, also called What You Will, is a 1601-02 comedy written by William Shakespeare. It is believed to have been written as a "Twelfth Night's entertainment" for the conclusion of the Christmas season and was first performed on February 2, 1602 at Candlemas, the end of Christmastide. The plot contains elements of Barnabe Rich's short story Of Apollonius and Silla and includes a love triangle among a shipwrecked woman disguised as a man, a noblewoman in mourning, and an eager duke, as well as the hilarious shaming of the pompous steward Malvolio. Plot Synopsis:

On the coast of Illyria, Viola becomes shipwrecked and separated from her twin brother, Sebastian, who she presumes is dead. With the help of a captain, she disguises herself as a man, assuming the name Cesario, and enters the employ of Duke Orsino. He tasks her with expressing his love for Olivia, a noblewoman in mourning for her father and brother who refuses to see suitors until her seven years of grieving are up. While Viola carries out his wishes, she falls in love with him and Olivia falls in love with Cesario (Viola in disguise).

Meanwhile, Sir Toby Belch, Olivia's uncle, and Sir Andrew Aguecheek, another suitor, engage in drinking and revelry, disturbing the peace at Olivia's estate long into the night. When Olivia's uptight and pompous steward, Malvolio, berates them, they conspire with two servants and Feste, the fool, to get back at him. The group convinces him that Olivia has fallen in love with him and convincing him to go to great (and hilarious) lengths to return her favor.
