Biography: The future members of Tool were all residents of Los Angeles by the mid-80s, and the band fell together quite naturally as a result of their living and jamming close to where other potential band members were living at the time. Tool were signed by Zoo Entertainment, and their first album, Opiate, was released. The band appeared naked in their first video, apart from parental advisory censorship stickers covering their genitals, as a protest against the
Parents Music Resource Center. After touring and blowing audiences away on a regular basis, the band had the video to their single, "Prison Sex", banned by MTV, when its graphic depictions of child abuse were condemned as unsuitable for American audiences.
Tool's second album, Aenima, which saw the replacement of original band member Paul d'Amour by Justin Chancellor, took its name from the term for the soul given by psychoanalyst Carl Jung (anima) and enema - meaning a cleansing, or catharsis of the soul. The release of the album's first track, "Stinkfist", caused yet another negative reaction from the media, and MTV and radio programmers renamed the tune "Track #1", much to the chagrin of the band and various media champions of free expression.
Tool went on to release more excellent music and to shake up the stagnant corridors of the media establishment in original and imaginative way. They even earned an indirect reputation for spreading rumors about themselves, when an semi-official website claimed the band had been involved in a serious road accident in Australia. This statement was made as an April Fool's prank, and several more of the same kind followed on its heels.
In 2001, Tool released Lateralus, after initially providing information to the media that was utterly untrue, regarding the title and names of the tracks on the forthcoming album. The album was followed by another, 10,000 Days, itself the subject of more controversy when it was leaked to radio stations and consumers two weeks before its release and received airplay on American radio stations.
The band has gone on to become one of the most enigmatic American rock-art outfits in many years, and it's a matter of common debate whether they are a metal band turned artsy or vice-versa. Either way, Tool are an interesting proposition, and a dead cert never to let you down or leave you bored.
