Thoroughly Modern Millie is a musical based on the 1967 film of the same name, which starred Julie Andrews, Mary Tyler Moore, and Carol Channing. The stage version has music by Jeanine Tesori (Caroline, or Change, Shrek the Musical), lyrics by Dick Scanlan (Everyday Rapture), and a book by Scanlan and Richard Morris. Notable songs from the score include "Not for the life of Me," "Forget About the Boy," and "Gimme Gimme." The show played at Broadway's Marquis Theatre from April 18, 2002 to June 20, 2004, a total of 903 performances (and 32 previews). A London mounting and successful productions on tour followed shortly thereafter.

Plot Synopsis:

In 1922, young woman Millie Dillmount hightails it out of Salina, Kansas to follow her dreams of becoming successful in New York City. She cuts her hair into a bob, assuming the stylish "flapper" look, but is soon mugged on the street. Looking for help, she comes across Jimmy, a whimsical young man who tells her she should just go back home and stop following an unlikely dream. She is tempted to follow the advice but finds her resolve and takes a room at a hotel for single women.

After a week, the hotel's owner, Mrs. Meers, confronts Millie about her unpaid tab. Suddenly, a woman named Miss Dorothy enters, inquiring about a room. She agrees to room with Millie and pay the rent until Millie can find a rich man to marry, and the two become fast friends. When Miss Dorothy confides to Mrs. Meers that she is an orphan, she decides to try to kidnap her and sell her into a slavery ring in Hong Kong, an arrangement she operates through the hotel.

Millie gets a job at Sincere Trust working for the wealthy Trevor Grayden III and decides she wants to marry him. Meanwhile, a hotel worker named Ching Ho tries to capture Miss Dorothy for Mrs. Meers, but falls in love with her in the process and decides to protect her. When Millie arrives with news of her new job, they go out to celebrate in a club, where they run into Jimmy. The club, a speakeasy, is busted by the police and Jimmy realizes he loves Millie while waiting for release from jail. Once released, he asks Millie to a party hosted by famous singer Muzzy van Hossmere. After the party, Millie berates Jimmy for being a womanizer until he suddenly kisses her and runs away. Realizing she loves him, she returns to the hotel only to find him sneaking out of Miss Dorothy's room.

Despite her co-workers urging her to let Jimmy go, Millie agrees to hear him out at dinner. He declares his love for her as they encounter Mr. Graydon, who had been stood up by Miss Dorothy. When he says that Mrs. Meers told him that Dorothy had suddenly checked out, Millie recalls a lot of other orphaned girls who had done the same thing. Realizing Mrs. Meers' scheme, they disguise Muzzy as a new orphan and expose the operation. Meanwhile, Ching Ho has already saved Mrs. Dorothy and won her love.

Jimmy proposes to Millie, who accepts even though he is poor. It is then revealed that Jimmy is the wealthy stepson of Muzzy, and Dorothy is his equally wealthy sister. They had been hiding their wealth to find true love and avoid gold diggers. In the end, the couples live happily ever after.
