The Secret Garden is a musical based on the 1911 children's novel of the same name by Frances Hodgson Burnett. It follows the happenings at an English manor where an orphaned girl, Mary, discovers her uncles' dark secrets and unlocks a mysterious hidden garden on the manor's grounds. While the novel focuses mostly on Mary's adventures, the musical concentrates equally on the struggles of the adult characters and the ghosts from the past that haunt them.
The original Broadway production of The Secret Garden premiered at the St. James Theatre on April 25 1991 and played 709 performances before closing on January 3, 1993. It was well-received and won a Tony for young star Daisy Eagan, who, at 11, was the youngest actress ever to win the award. The show also won Best Book and Best Scenic Design (the innovative set resembled a Victorian model theatre with pop-outs, paper dolls, and collages). This is the synopsis of the original Broadway production. The show was re-worked for its London production.
10-year-old English girl Mary Lennox has grown up in India all her life. One day, she wakes up to learn that her parents and others she knew have died of cholera. After being discovered by fellow survivors who once worked with her father, she is sent to live in England with her only remaining relatives. When she arrives at Misselthwaite manor, she meets the master of the house, Archibald Craven, who is still grieving over his wife, Lily (Mary's mother's sister). His brother, Dr. Neville Craven, also lives in and manages the manor. The house is haunted by several ghosts, chiefly because the residents can't let go of the painful memories of the past.
As Mary becomes accustomed to Misselthwaite, she meets Martha, a young maid who urges Mary to play outside and tells her of a hidden garden. Mary explores the topiary maze along with old gardener Ben Weatherstaff, who tells her that the secret garden has been locked since Lily's death because it reminds Archibald too much of her, and Martha's brother, Dickon, who shows her how to talk to a bird, which eventually leads her to the hidden garden's key. Archibald and Neville meet with Mary and are surprised at how much she resembles her aunt Lily, with whom they were both in love. When she hears someone crying, she stumbles upon her cousin Colin, who has been confined to bed since his mother's (Lily's) death. Colin is fine, but Archibald keeps him bedridden because is paranoid that he will pass on his hunchback to his son. Just as the two children begin to talk, Neville and the housekeeper, Mrs. Medlock, burst in and forbid her from seeing Colin again. As a storm rages, Mary runs outside and finds the door to the mysterious hidden garden.
Archibald and Neville both dream of Lily, but Neville's unrequited love for her causes him to urge Archibald to move away and leave him in charge of the manor. After reading a fairy tale to the sleeping Colin, Archibald leaves the country. Meanwhile, Mary asks Dickon to help her revitalize the garden, which appears dead. He assures her there is still at least one streak of green somewhere. Mary, Dickon, and Martha bring Colin (in a wheelchair) to the garden, and the fresh air and exercise begin to make him better. After Neville threatens to send Mary to boarding school, she writes a letter to Archibald urging him to come home.
With a glimmer of hope in the garden, what will become of Misselthwaite and its inhabitants? Order The Secret Garden tickets to unlock the truth!
