The Scottsboro Boys is the last collaboration between the legendary musical theatre team of John Kander and Fred Ebb, authors of the musicals Chicago, Cabaret, Kiss of the Spider Woman, and Curtains, among others. With a book by David Thompson, it is based on the true story of The Scottsboro Boys of Alabama, who were accused of rape in 1931. The case has become a famous example of racism and legal malfeasance. The show is presented in the form of a minstrel show (a traditionally racist form), intended to present a social critique.
As far back as 2002, original director Susan Stroman (Young Frankenstein) met with Kander and Ebb about the project. After Ebb's death in 2004, Kander completed the lyrics to the show and it was produced off-Broadway at the Vineyard Theatre in 2010. It moved to Broadway from October to December of that year and, despite having closed long before the awards, received 12 Tony nominations. The host of a minstrel show introduces the players of the troupe and goes into telling the story of the Scottsboro Boys. In 1931 Alabama, two runaway white girls jump out of a train at a station and, in order to get away, accuse nine black boys there of rape. The boys are sent to jail, sentenced to death, and have little hope of being released without a very good lawyer.
As the boys sit in prison, they ponder what they would do if they were free again. As they are about to be executed, the verdict is overturned, largely thanks to the sensational response the case has received in the North. Samuel Leibowitz, a New York lawyer, comes to represent them in court, and one of the girls even admits that the boys are innocent, but the Southern District Attorney claims that her testimony was bought by the defense.
The boys are newly optimistic, but are found guilty yet again and remain in prison. Each appeal ends the same way, and they spend year after year behind bars. Within six years, four of the younger boys are released, but the others are still detained. Will justice ever prevail?
