About the Show:

The Road to Mecca is a play by the South African playwright Athol Fugard. It is loosely based on the story of Helen Martins, a woman from Nieu-Bethesda, Eastern Cape, South Africa; it is there that, beginning around 1945, she decorated her home with countless sculptures and other works of art to combat the dullness of her life. When a colored man named Koos Malgas began helping her in 1964, she drew scorn from the locals (largely because of apartheid). Though she did not receive support for or praise of her work during her lifetime, her home is now a national monument called The Owl House.

Originally written by Fugard in the mid-1980s, The Road to Mecca premiered at the National Theatre in London before becoming a critical success in the United States, winning the 1988 New York Drama Critics' Circle Award for Best Foreign Play. A 1992 film adaptation was made starring Fugard, Yvonne Bryceland, and Kathy Bates. The 2011-2012 Broadway revival stars Carla Gugino, Tony-winner Jim Dale, and Tony, Emmy, and Golden Globe-winner Rosemary Harris. Plot Synopsis:

In a South African village during the time of apartheid, the increasingly eccentric, aging artist Miss Helen is facing pressures to give up her independent lifestyle to live in a church retirement home. Since her husband's death, she has spent her time transforming her home into a breathtaking, detailed piece of art. But now she faces depression and a decreasing capacity to care for herself. In desperation, she summons her only real friend, Elsa, a feisty young teacher from Cape Town. When the conservative local minister arrives to ascertain Miss Helen's decision, the three engage in a fiery exchange, debating on conformity, artistic expression, and faith.
