Biography: The band that would eventually come to be known as The Police was formed by Stewart Copeland in 1977. Gordon Sumner (who became known as "Sting" due to his wearing a yellow and black hooped sweater all the time) and Henry Padovani started rehearsing with Copeland in January 1977. A few months later, former Gong man Mike Howlett asked Sting and respected guitarist Andy Summers to join his as Strontium 90, a band constructed to play in the Gong reunion project. Sting's friend Stewart Copeland tagged along for the gig, which took place in Paris in May, 1977. Padovani dropped out of the band and Summers stepped into his shoes, as the band embarked on their rise to fame.
A re-release of the single "Roxanne", an American tour, and a Wrigley's spearmint gum commercial in which they wore their hair bleached blond, all conspired to launch the Police into the limelight and leave a distinct image in the public eye. This, combined with their tendency to play reggae music, cemented their destiny as superstars of the music world. Sting began to dominate the sound, style, and appeal of the trio, and in 1986 they performed their last ever song together, "Don't stand so close to me", at the Amnesty International concert. The threesome drifted apart without any official statement marking their demise, and over the years the pressure has mounted for a reunion.
