The Merchant of Venice's story is a thing of legend: The "Merchant" is in fact Antonio, a wealthy man in the fabled seafaring city who decides to help out a ne'er do well friend, Bassanio, with a loan. He needs the loan because his wealth is tied up at sea, and Bassanio needs money to travel to woo his sweetheart, Portia. The Jewish moneylender, Shylock (Abraham), agrees to lend Antonio the money on one condition: If Antonio fails to come up with the cash by a given date, he must give Shylock a pound of his flesh. Shylock's seemingly vindictive request is fueled by Antonio's antisemitism, but Antonio sees the no-interest loan as very lenient, and he agrees to the contract. Shylock's Jewish identity represented something very controversial in the late 1500s, and the complex reasons for Shakespeare's characterization of Shylock run deep and wide.
