The Man Who Came To Dinner Information

About the Show:

The Man Who Came to Dinner is a comedic play written by George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart. The writing team penned the play as a vehicle for their friend, Alexander Woollcott, who, like the main character Sheridan Whiteside, was a theatre critic and radio host. They were inspired by an actual visit to Hart's estate by Woollcott, who demonstrated many of the same behaviors of his fictional persona (see plot synopsis). Several other characters are also based on real people; for example, Beverly Carlton is based on playwright Noel Coward, and Banjo is based on Harpo Marx. In addition, the song "What Am I To Do?" was penned by Cole Porter specifically for the play.

Using these real life connections as inspiration, Moss and Kaufman finished the play and it premiered on October 16, 1939 at New York City's Music Box Theatre. It found great success, running for an impressive 739 performances. The play has since been revived on Broadway, in London, and at many smaller theatres.
