The Magic Flute is an opera in two acts with music written by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and a German libretto written by Emanuel Shikaneder. The premiere production on September 30, 1791 starred Schikaneder (as Papageno) and, naturally, was conducted by Mozart (one of his last appearances before his death in December of that year). The story is set in a mystical land where a young prince journeys to save a captured princess. Now a staple in the repertoire of many opera companies, including the Metropolitan Opera, this show has been interpreted and produced in a thousand ways. Act I: In an ethereal land between the sun and moon, a handsome prince named Tamino is lost and being chased by a serpent. Three servant women of the Queen of the Night save him and give him a picture of the Queen's daughter, Pamina, who has been captured by the wicked Sarastro. Tamino embarks on a mission to save her with the bird catcher Papageno. The ladies give Tamino a magic flute and Papageno silver bells to aid them, as well as the help of three spirit guides.
When the men arrive at the temple of Sarastro, they learn that the Queen, not Sarastro, is evil. When Tamino hears from Papageno that Pamina is safe, he charms wild animals with his flute. Sarastro's slave, Monostatos, chases Papageno and Pamina until he is stopped by the magic of the silver bells. Sarastro enters, scolds Monostatos, and promises Pamina that he will eventually free her.
Act II: The Queen visits Pamina in the night and orders her to kill Sarastro, who tries to ensure her that he is not interested in revenge. In the temple, Tamino obeys the initiation orders to abstain from food, drink, and speaking while Papageno does not. When Tamino remains silent even in Pamina's presence, she thinks he is being indifferent to her and she is crushed.
Papageno abandons the initiation in favor of finding a wife, but when he finally commits to a woman, she vanishes. Meanwhile, Tamino and Pamina are united and face the trials of fire and water together under the protection of the magic flute. When the three spirits tell Papageno to use his magic bells, he finds the perfect wife. When the Queen of the night and her army attack the temple, they are defeated and exiled, allowing Pamina and Tamino to live together in bliss.
