About the Show:

The Heiress is a 1947 play by Ruth and Augustus Goetz, who adapted the story from Henry James' 1880 novel Washington Square. The play's Broadway debut opened on September 29, 1947 at the Biltmore Theatre (later re-named the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre), starring Wendy Hiller (A Moon for the Misbegotten), Basil Rathbone (David Copperfield), and Peter Cookson (Can Can). The 1995 Broadway revival won the Tony Award for Best Revival of a Play and awards for stars Cherry Jones (24) and Frances Sternhagen (The Good Doctor) and director Gerald Gutierrez (Dinner at Eight). The 2012 strictly limited Broadway revival cast Jessica Chastain (The Help), David Strathairn (Good Night, and Good Luck), Dan Stevens (Downton Abbey), and Judith Ivey (Hurlyburly). Plot Synopsis:

Young Catherine Sloper lives in 1850s New York with her father, Dr. Austin Sloper. A young man named Morris Townsend begins courting Catherine, who is shy, unsophisticated, and plan, solely for her money, but she falls in love with him, ignorant of his dishonorable ambitions. When her father, who suspects Morris of gold-digging aspirations, forbids her to marry, but when she suggests that they elope, he refuses because he would not get her fortune if they did. When he returns, she refuses to see him, finally aware of his underhanded intentions.
