About the Show:
Written by Tennessee Williams (Cat on a Hot Tin Roof), The Glass Menagerie is a play about a family dealing with isolation, desperation, and hope. This four-character piece was Williams' first big success, garnering enthusiastic reviews in its 1944 Chicago production as well as its 1945 Broadway premiere. It is now regarded as a classic of American drama and is frequently produced across the U.S. and around the world.
Several film adaptations have been made, including a 1950 version starring Gertrude Lawrence, Jane Wyman, and Kirk Douglas, and a 1987 version, directed by Paul Newman and starring Joanne Woodward, John Malkovich, Karen Allen, and James Naughton. A 2013 revival at the American Repertory Theatre in Boston, Massachusetts starred Celia Keenan-Bolger (Peter and the Starcatcher), Cherry Jones (Doubt), and Zachary Quinto (TV's Heroes). Positive reviews earned it a Broadway transfer to the Booth Theatre soon thereafter. Add this great play to your list and order your Glass Menagerie tickets right away.
The narrator/protagonist, Tom, introduces the piece as a play focused on his memories of his mother, Amanda, and his sister, Laura. Though Amanda has withstood being abandoned by her husband, she yearns for the comforts of her youth as a Southern belle. Laura is very insecure and tentative about the outside world, and Tom works a tedious warehouse job to support them. Tom can barely stand his menial existence and often goes to the movies for hours on end.
Meanwhile, Laura tends to her collection of glass animals while Amanda desperately seeks a suitor for her. One day, Tom brings home a friend who Laura recognizes as Jim, a school friend who she was very fond of. After a long evening, Laura is alone with Jim, who analyzes her insecurities and kisses her. But when he reveals that he is already engaged and accidentally knocks down her glass unicorn, she gives it to him as a gift and he leaves.
Amanda berates Tom, assuming he knew of Jim's engagement, but nothing in the house has changed. How long can Tom live this way? Order your The Glass Menagerie tickets to experience this heartbreaking story for yourself.
