About the Show:

The Elephant Man premiered on Broadway in 1979, the lead role being played by notable actors like David Schofield, David Bowie, Bruce Davison, and Mark Hamill. The play is interesting because no prosthetic makeup is used to depict Joseph Merrick, but rather the actors embody his deformity through physical gestures instead. The Elephant Man was revived in 2002 on Broadway, starring Billy Crudup (Almost Famous; Watchmen) and Kate Burton (Grey’s Anatomy). Its 2015 production will star Bradley Cooper (Silver Linings Playbook; American Hustle) and Patricia Clarkson (The Green Mile; Shutter Island).

Plot Synopsis:

Joseph Merrick, a real-life physically deformed man from the late 1800’s, is the main character in Bernard Pomerance's Tony Award-winning The Elephant Man. Due to his appearance, he becomes a staple in a traveling freak show during which his intelligence and integrity are overlooked. A reputable doctor takes in Merrick upon discovering him in London, which brings Merrick even more attention, especially from a lovely actress. Though Merrick attempts to proceed with a normal life, he finds that he is unable as his condition only worsens.
