The Drowsy Chaperone Information
About the Show:
The Drowsy Chaperone is a musical that presents a spoof of 1920s Jazz-Age musicals within a comedy. It is narrated by "Man in Chair," an eccentric, reclusive man who is obsessed with musical theatre. He puts on a record in his living room, which transports the audience to the show The Drowsy Chaperone, often breaking the fourth wall to comment on the plot and actors. The show features such memorable and humorous songs as "Show Off," "I Am Aldolpho," and "As We Stumble Along."
The show was written as a wedding gift for Bob Martin (book co-author and original Man in Chair). After years of development, it finally opened on Broadway on May 1, 2006 and played 674 performances, through December 30, 2007. The original cast included Broadway stars Sutton Foster (Thoroughly Modern Millie, Anything Goes), Beth Leavel (Mamma Mia!, Baby It's You!), and Danny Burstein (South Pacific, Follies), and the show was directed by Casey Nicholaw (The Book of Mormon, Elf). It has subsequently been produced around the world and on two United States tours. Grab your Drowsy Chaperone tickets now to see this hilarious hit live.
Man in Chair is an agoraphobic recluse who is obsessed with Broadway musicals. As he puts on a treasured recording of the (fictional) 1928 musical comedy The Drowsy Chaperone, he finds himself transported into the show, and his apartment morphs into a beautiful, flashy Broadway set.
In the show, showgirl Janet van de Graaff plans to quit her career to marry oil tycoon Robert Martin. But the success of her show, Feldzieg's Follies, depends on her name and talent, and Feldzieg, the producer, is being intimidated by thugs to try to stop the wedding. To that end, Feldzieg employs Aldolpho, a ridiculous, overly confident Latin Lothario, to seduce Janet away from Robert. At the same time, Janet tests Robert by disguising herself as someone else, and when she gets him to kiss her, a misunderstanding threatens their marriage. Subsequent events entail dream sequences, mistaken identity, and a particularly "drowsy" chaperone, played in the show by a disheveled diva who isn't afraid of showing up her cast-mates.
Over the course of the show, Man in Chair interjects his own comments on the action and performances, and he divulges facts about his own life as it goes on. When the record ends, he is back in his apartment alone, but the record remains to comfort him when he is low. Order your Drowsy Chaperone tickets today to see the wacky action and to join Man in Chair on his emotional journey.
