About the Show:

The Columnist is a new play by David Auburn that chronicles the life of eminent newspaper columnist Joseph Alsop. Auburn is one of the nation's leading dramatists; his 2000 hit Broadway play Proof won him a Tony Award as well as a Pulitzer Prize. Other plays include Skyscraper and What Do You Believe About the Future?. He also wrote the screenplays for The Lake House (2006), starring Sandra Bullock and Keanu Reeves, and The Girl in the Park (2007), which he also directed.

Broadway fans rejoiced when it was announced that Tony and Emmy-winning actor John Lithgow would be starring in The Columnist in April 2012. Lithgow's Tony-winning performances include his Broadway debut, 1973's The Changing Room, and 2002's The Sweet Smell of Success. Other memorable stage appearances include 2005's Dirty Rotten Scoundrels and 1988's M. Butterfly. Additionally, Lithgow is known for his work on the television sitcom Third Rock from the Sun and his appearances in films like The World According to Garp and Terms of Endearment.

About Joseph Alsop: After graduating from Harvard, Joseph Alsop rose to prominence while exploiting his familial connections to Washington (his mother was a niece of Theodore Roosevelt). He wrote for publications including the New York Herald Tribune and the Saturday Evening Post, chiefly covering government and politics. After taking a hiatus to serve in World War II, he resumed his journalistic career with his brother, Stewart, producing three editions per week of the column "Matter of Fact," a title specifically chosen to highlight the brothers' use of fact over opinion and sensationalism. A key player in mid-century politics, Aslop traveled the world covering foreign affairs. Aslop kept his personal life to himself, but controversy found him nonetheless when certain relationships of his were exposed. Order tickets today to see the true story of his complex, high-profile life.

Plot Synopsis:
