The Cherry Orchard Information

About the Show:

The Cherry Orchard is one of the most celebrated works by Russian master playwright Anton Chekhov. It was the last play Chekhov wrote and is one of his most interesting. He intended it to be a comedy, and though it does contain some aspects of farce, it is largely dramatic and is often directed as a tragedy with comic elements. It concerns an aristocratic woman's family coming to terms with losing their precious estate due to growing debt. The story is focused on the socio-political climate of Russia at the turn of the 20th century: the aristocracy helplessly eroding away, the middle class coming into the picture after the liberation of the serfs, and the increasing influence of capitalism. Since its premiere, the play has been translated into many languages and presented around the world. Now considered a classic, its influence can be seen in the works of some of the best playwrights who followed Chekhov, including Eugene O'Neill and Arthur Miller. Plot Synopsis:

On a cool May morning just after the turn of the 20th century, the cherry trees are blooming at the estate of landowner Lyubov Andreyevna Ranevskaya. She has been away for five years since suddenly fleeing to France after the tragic death of her son. But after hearing that she has tried to kill herself while living with her abusive lover, her 17-year-old daughter Anya, Anya's governess, Charlotta, and family friend Lopakhin await her return. Lopakhin reminds Ranevskaya and her brother, Gayev, that their estate, which includes a huge cherry orchard, is about to be auctioned off to pay the family's debts. The only way to save the estate is to allow building developments to be erected, but this project will destroy the precious, historic orchard. The family and the rest of the community try to preserve the traditions they hold dear, but the winds of change are blowing through Russia, and they are still feeling the effects of the emancipation of the serfs decades earlier. Can the members of Ranevskaya's family and household hold their lives together in the face of so much change? Order The Cherry Orchard tickets today to see the compelling developments live.
