The Best Man Information

About the Show:

Gore Vidal's The Best Man is a play full of political double-dealing, mudslinging, ruthless ambition, questionable integrity, and secrecy. An inside look at the sordid activities behind the scenes of a presidential nomination convention, it dramatizes the shocking lengths candidates and their conspirators will go to in order to secure political power. With the stakes as high as the presidency of the United States, these individuals are truly put to the ultimate moral test. The play originally opened on Broadway on March 31, 1960 and ran through July 8, 1961 for a total of 520 performances. But its themes are always relevant, especially during election seasons, when the workings of the American political system cause many citizens extra concern. Get your The Best Man tickets today to see the dramatization of what many believe may well still be happening behind Washington's closed doors.

"Its behind-the-scenes look at the workings of a political party reveals hidden agendas, conflicting personalities, and incredibly challenging ethical struggles." Read the full review >>

Plot Synopsis:

During the primaries of an unspecified political party, the frontrunners for the presidential nomination are William Russell and Joe Cantwell. Russell is a highly educated, strictly principled individual, but an affair has distanced him from his wife and he has the ghost of a previous nervous breakdown to overcome. Cantwell is a self-described populist and rabidly patriotic anti-communist. But he is a desperate opportunist, willing to use any means necessary to prevail.

The two presidential hopefuls meet at the nominating convention, where they both vie for the support of the dying former president, Arthur Hockstader. After vacillating between the two, he eventually settles on Russell, but publicly endorses neither. Behind the scenes, the candidates campaign with the help of their wives as Russell learns that Hockstader has offered the vice-presidential place on the ticket to each of the three other candidates. When one of Russell's aides finds a former military comrade of Cantwell's who is willing to make up allegations of a homosexual affair, Cantwell calls his bluff, knowing him to be too morally upstanding to sink to such depths. In the end, one of the candidates does something shocking and unexpected that turns the entire race on its head. Order your The Best Man tickets today to witness this intriguing political drama.
