Tennessee Titans Information

Tennessee Titans News

The 2006 season began for the Tennessee Titans with the team intent on bettering their 4-12 record of 2005. This appeared a pretty straightforward task, but the NFL can be a cruel and heartless place. There was a heck of a mountain to climb for Tennessee, and they knew it. In the 2006 NFL Draft, the Titans acquired, with their third overall pick, Vince Young, star quarterback out of the University of Texas. This caused a stir in Houston, as those fans wanted their local hero playing for them, and the move was to come back to haunt the Houston Texans later in the season when the two teams clashed. The Titans' second round pick was University of South Carolina running back LenDale White. The rest of Tennessee's picks went on Pennsylvania State Safety Calvin Lowry, North Carolina State's Stephen Tulloch, Miami University's Terna Nande, Tennessee defensive tackle Jesse Mahelona, Wisconsin wide receiver Jonathan Orr, Stanford's Cortland Finnegan, and two of Utah's finest, Spencer Toone, and Quinton Ganther. The Titans are by no means the biggest, wealthiest team in the NFL, and the men from LP Field girded their loins for what was to be a roller-coaster ride of a season.

Tennessee hosted New York Jets in their first game of the 2006 season, and they were off to a bad start, trialing 16 to 0 by the third quarter. They attempted an admirable comeback in the final quarter, but New York proved too much, and after the Titans had clawed their way back via two touchdowns and two successful extra points, the Jets scored again, to take it to 23 to 16. It was a sad day for Tennessee, as the fightback had been truly magnificent, but the better team won in the end. The next game was an even bigger defeat, 40 to 7 at San Diego Chargers, where the Titans found themselves down 20 to zero by halftime. The following week, away at Miami, the scoreline was slimmer, but again the Titans fell under the cosh, going down 13 to 10 to the Dolphins in a game in which they mounted a convincing comeback after initially trailing. Unfortunately Miami scored a 39 yard field goal, sending the Titans into a 0 and 3 nightmare start to the season. Next up was Dallas, and predictably the Cowboys beat them 45 to 14, and this was followed by a trip to the home of in-form Indianapolis Colts, the team that went on to do it all. The scoreline was again close, with the Colts defeating the Titans by a slim one point margin, 14 to 13. Finally, in week six, the Titans earned their first win of the 2006 campaign, defeating Washington Redskins 25 to 22.

After a bye week, the Titans entered week eight against Houston Texans, the team whose fans had wanted Vince Young to play for them. To rub salt in the Texans' wounds, Young delivered a 20 yard touchdown pass in the third quarter, and by the end of the game, the Titans had registered their second consecutive win, now standing at 2-5. Week nine saw a trip down to Jacksonville to face the Jags, and unfortunately the wining streak was cut short by a 7 to 37 loss. The week after, the Baltimore Ravens added to the Titans' misery by again shading a victory by just a single point, in a season marred by such results, along with valiant fightbacks which went unrewarded. The pressure was mounting for Tennessee, as the LP Field team began to wonder where they would end up by the season's end. The Titans went to Philadelphia Eagles in week eleven, and crushed the Eagles by 31 to 13, with Vince Young completing a 14 yard touchdown pass for Ben Troupe. The Eagles staged a fightback, but as the half drew to a close, kicker Rob Bironas booted a 36 yard field goal, ensuring the Titans stayed on top. In the fourth quarter, the Titans Keith Bullock returned a fumble and scored a 16 yard touchdown. Now, the Titans were sitting at a 3 to 7 record for the season. The next game was against New York Giants, and again the Titans managed a 24 to 21 win, with Young featuring heavily in the scoring moves. The home game against Indianapolis Colts the next week turned out a surprise win for Tennessee, as they beat the Colts by 20 to 17, in this season noted for its close shaves.

The return to his hometown of Houston was no picnic for Vince Young, but the star met the challenge and performed well, in a 26-20 victory for the Titans. They won two of their last three games, and amazingly finished in 2nd place in the AFC South Division, after a shaky start and numerous close defeats. Their last chance to make the playoffs was squandered when they allowed the powerful Patriots to defeat them 40-23 at home, and suddenly the roller-coaster ride was over for Tennessee. It had been quite a season.
