Cult band turned world conquerors System of a Down started making demos in Southern Cali in 1994. Armenian-Americans Serj Tankian (lead vocals, keyboards, rhythm guitar), Daron Malakian (guitar, vocals), Shavo Odadjian (bass, background vocals) and John Dolmayan (drums) laid down tracks for an untitled demo tape in 1995 that surfaced on file-sharing networks in the metal underground. The band’s demos led to a contract with American/Columbian Records and System of a Down’s self-titled debut featured popular videos for the singles Sugar and Spiders. Fans literally rioted over the release of SOAD’s second album, Toxicity, when the band wasn’t allowed to play a gig in a parking lot in Hollywood. System of a Down concert tickets for tours with Slayer, Metallica, Mars Volta and at Ozzfest were highly coveted and their continuing onslaught of hit singles including Chop Suey!, Aerials, Boom!, Kill Rock 'N Roll and Vicinity of Obscenity left fans wanting more. After 10 years, five albums and a Grammy award for their single B.Y.O.B., the band decided to take a hiatus in 2006. To fans delight, System of a Down returned in 2010 to announce that they would hit the European festival circuit and tour North America in 2011-2012.
