About the Theatre:Designed by Eugene DeRosa and built by Fortune Gallo, the building that now houses Studio 54 was erected as the Gallo Opera House in 1927. It opened with a production of Puccini's La Boheme but soon closed when the stock market crashed. Over the next two decades, the theatre changed hands, functions, and names several times. It was known as the New Yorker Theatre beginning in 1930, transformed into the nightclub Casino de Paris in 1933, named the Palladium Theatre in 1936, taken over by the WPA and named the Federal Music Theatre in 1937, and renamed the New Yorker Theatre in 1939. In 1942, CBS bought the building and used it as a studio until the company sold it in 1972. In 1977, new owners Steve Rubell and Ian Schrager opened the space as the famous Studio 54 nightclub. In 1998, the building returned to presenting legitimate theatre with a wildly popular revival of Cabaret. Since the Roundabout Theatre Co. bought it, Studio 54 has presented several great shows, including Stephen Sondheim's musical Assassins, a revival of the musical The Apple Tree starring Kristin Chenoweth (Wicked, TV's Glee), and a revival of the play Harvey starring Jim Parsons (The Normal Heart, TV's The Big Band Theory).
