Scandalous: The Life and Trials of Aimee Semple McPherson Information

About the Show:

Scandalous: The Life and Trials of Aimee Semple McPherson is the musical story of the titular evangelist. The show's librettist and lyricist, Kathie Lee Gifford (Putting it Together, Under the Bridge, TV's Live with Regis and Kathie Lee), describes her as "the most famous person you've never heard of." Though successors like Jim Bakker and Jimmy Swaggart have proven to be more enduring in popular culture memory, McPherson pioneered the presentation of the gospel through a multi-media empire. Unfortunately, she also pioneered the scandal that follows such high-profile and compelling individuals when she became embroiled in drug addiction, and alleged infidelity and perjury. This musical presents her story and allows the audience to decide whether she is a saint or a sinner, or perhaps some combination of each. Order your Scandalous tickets right away and experience the dramatic tale of one of our nation's first tabloid targets.

Scandalous (previously titled Saving Aimee) premiered at the White Plains Performing Arts Center in October of 2005, and a revised production debuted at the Signature Theatre in Arlington Virginia on April 10, 2007. A new production opened at Seattle's famed 5th Avenue Theatre on September 30, 2011. In the world premiere and subsequent productions, including the 2012 Broadway premiere, McPherson has been portrayed by the supremely talented Carolee Carmello (Parade, Mamma Mia!, The Addams Family), who has played the role to great critical and popular praise.

Plot Synopsis:

Aimee Semple McPherson became one of the most famous (and infamous) women in America in the first half of the 20th century. Her beauty and charisma got her noticed as she blazed a trail for spreading the gospel using the media of newspapers, radio, and film. During her time in Hollywood, she met and befriended some of the biggest stars of the day, including Charlie Chaplin and William Randolph Hurst. She gained an enormous following and even experimented with faith healing. But fame and success also brought temptation, and she struggled with prescription drug addiction and (suspected) adultery. Perhaps the biggest controversy of her life, however, was the 1926 grand jury trial investigating the matter of her alleged kidnapping, an event that catapulted her to the status of modern-day tabloid celebrities. Order your Scandalous tickets today to get the full story on this fascinating woman.
