2014 Padres Preview

San Diego Padres

2006 marked the last time the San Diego Padres played a playoff baseball game, but that could very well change in 2014. The Padres enter the 2014 season as dark horse contenders in the NL West -- but should find themselves in contention throughout the year.

San Diego didn't make any major moves this offseason, instead making small, quiet moves that could yield major dividends. The Padres took a chance on oft-injured right hander Josh Johnson, signing the former Toronto Blue Jay and Miami Marlin to a one-year, $8 million deal. Johnson had the worst year of his career in 2013 with the Blue Jays, but if he's healthy, he should rebound nicely for the Padres, pitching in the pitcher-friendly PETCO Park.

The Padres also signed relief pitcher Joaquin Benoit to a two-year, $15.5 million contract. Benoit will serve as San Diego's setup man to closer Huston Street, replacing the traded Luke Gregerson. Benoit joins one of the best bullpens in the National League, along with the aforementioned Street, Tim Stauffer and Nick Vincent.

If San Diego is going to challenge the Los Angeles Dodgers for the NL West crown, the Padres will need their young hitters to take steps forward. Yonder Alonso and Jeff Gyorko in particular, slated to start at first and second base, will need to progress. If they do, the Padres could boast one of the National League's most effective lineup -- somewhat akin to Billy Beane's Oakland Athletics.

With the Padres poised to make a run at playoff baseball for the first time since 2006, now is the perfect time to get out to the gorgeous PETCO Park and watch a Padres game or two! Be sure to check out Ticket Liquidator's selection of Padres tickets, and buy yours today!
