Rusalka Information

About the Show:

Rusalka is an opera in three acts with music by Antonin Dvorak to a Czech libretto by Jaroslav Kvapil, a poet and playwright. Also billed as a "lyric fairy tale," it tells the story of a water nymph's doomed love affair with a human prince. It premiered on March 31, 1901 in Prague and is now considered one of the most successful Czech operas. Buy Rusalka tickets today to see this classic tragic opera performed live.

Plot Synopsis:

Act I: The water gnome Vodnik asks Rusalka, a water nymph, why she is sad. She responds that she has fallen in love with a human prince who came to swim in the lake. Vodnik tells Rusalka that to become human and be with the prince, she will have to visit the witch Jezibaba, though he warns her against it. The witch says she will make Rusalka human but tells her that if she doesn't find love, she will be cursed and the prince will die. Once she takes the potion to become human, she can't speak, but the prince finds her and whisks her away to his castle.

Act II: At the castle, the staff is abuzz about the prince's wedding to the mysterious, silent Rusalka. He is determined to connect with her despite a foreign princess' disparaging comments. Vodnik visits Rusalka in the garden pool, where she begs him to help her win back the prince's love. But when the prince returns professing his love for the foreign princess, Rusalka's pleas don't affect him. Vodnik warns the prince of his fate before disappearing with Rusalka, and the princess laughs at him, telling him he is doomed.

Act III: Back at the lake, the witch Jezibaba tells Rusalka that she can save herself if she kills the prince, but she refuses and recedes into the lake in misery. The prince rushes in from the forest calling to Rusalka. She warns him that her kiss would kill him now, but he begs her to end his misery. She kisses him and holds him as he dies. She asks for relief for his soul before vanishing into the water.
