REM were the quintessential mystery cool band of the 80s, with a strange name, a sensitive but strong-voiced lead singer, and a habit of playing their guitars in a decidedly normal-yet-strange-sounding way. The boys from Athens, Georgia set the bar for virtually every alternative band who followed them.
