Radio City Rockettes InformationThe Rockettes are an American icon, having been around longer than many theatrical ventures. Their faces have changed as often as their costumes, but ticket sales continue to grow, a testament to the timelessness of their appeal.
Though most famous for their Radio City Christmas Spectacular, the troupe is now a tour that travels to six cities in addition to New York, including Chicago, Boston, Dallas, Houston, Nashville and Toronto.
Just as they did in 1925, the Rockettes continue to delight audiences with their optical illusion of cookie-cutter girls dancing in sync. Placing the tallest girls in the center and descending to the shortest girls on each end, the impression of uniformity is created. The girls can be no shorter than 5' 6," no taller than 5' 10". And this is just where the standards start.
Becoming part of a tradition as American as a slice of apple pie is tough…though the girls probably don't get to eat much of it. The grueling dance schedule and performances, which can number up to three a day during the Christmas season, mean plenty of discipline for these ladies.
Over the years there have been adjustments to the performance on many levels. Until 1979 the Rockettes were only a short act between movie showings. Now a full 90-minute show of their own, the troupe went from 16 dancers to the 36 that can be seen today.
The show itself has seen new additions, two new acts in 1999 still get rave reviews, and the show opener has uses 3-D glasses so patrons can take a Santa's-sleigh view of the city.
But some of the most notable differences over the years have been in the costumes that the ladies wear. Not only the number of times they are changed during a performance (up to eight with only 80 seconds available at times), but also in the design of the outfits themselves.
The special effects of the show are not the only thing influenced by technology. With the development of Danskin Lycra Spandex, the girls' tights became thicker and more durable, allowing for even higher kicks.
From advances in feminism to technological developments, the show has kept the same excitement and energy for the audience. What they wear may have changed over the years, but the magic in their performance is as present as it was in 1925.
