2014 Pirates Outlook

After two decades of futility, the Pittsburgh Pirates finally broke through in 2013, clinching a Wild Card berth and defeating the Cincinnati Reds in the Wild Card game, before losing to the St. Louis Cardinals in the NLDS. Though the Pirates didn't advance to the NLCS or World Series, 2013 was a major step forward for the Bucs. Last season, 2,256,862 fans made their way to PNC Park to watch the Pirates during the regular season, and with Pittsburgh's success in 2013, that number is expected to rise in 2014. Be sure to buy your Pirates tickets at Ticket Liquidator, and head out to PNC Park this year!

Pirates fans will not see many of the key players that led Pittsburgh to a Wild Card berth last season in 2014. Justin Morneau, Marlon Byrd, Garrett Jones, John Buck and A.J. Burnett all left Pittsburgh via free agency during the offseason, and Pirates general manager Neal Huntington has not addressed the team's holes through free agency. The Pirates did sign free agent pitcher Edinson Volquez, and manager Clint Hurdle will attempt to transform him like the Pirates did to Francisco Liriano in 2013.

Instead of signing a major free agent, Huntington will instead rely on Pittsburgh's farm system to make an impact in 2014 and beyond. Starling Marte produced for the Pirates last sesaon, hitting .280/.343/.441 in 566 plate appearances, and should continue to improve. With Marte in left field, and reigning NL MVP Andrew McCutchen in center field, the Pirates have one of the best LF-CF tandems in all of baseball. Gregory Polanco, ranked by Baseball America as the No. 10 prospect in all of baseball, could find himself patrolling right field at PNC Park this summer -- if he plays well at AA and AAA. Polanco profiles as an All-Star and potential MVP candidate, and will provide even more excitement at PNC Park.

Neil Walker, Pedro Alvarez, Jordy Mercer, Russell Martin and Gaby Sanchez are projected to round out Pittsburgh's Opening Day lineup.

With A.J. Burnett now calling Philadelphia home, left hander Francisco Liriano is now the ace of the Pirates staff. Liriano was one of baseball's best pitchers in 2013, going 16-8 with a 3.02 ERA and 1.22 WHIP, while striking out 163 in just 161 innings of work. Gerrit Cole, one of the best young pitchers in all of baseball, projects to be Pittsburgh's No. 2 starter behind Liriano. Wandy Rodriguez, Charlie Morton and Edinson Volquez all figure to round out Pittsburgh's staff -- but don't be surprised if Jameson Taillon cracks Pittsburgh's rotation in June or July.

2014 Pirates Schedule

It won't be an easy road for the Pirates in 2014 if they want to make it back to the playoffs. The NL Central produced three playoff teams last year, including the defending National League champions, the St. Louis Cardinals. The Pirates will once again face off with the Cincinnati Reds, who will be out for revenge after being eliminated by Pittsburgh in last year's Wild Card game. The Milwaukee Brewers will be better in 2014 than they were in 2013, as superstar Ryan Braun's suspension ended at the conclusion of the 2013 season. Though the Chicago Cubs aren't likely to factor into the playoff race in 2014, Anthony Rizzo and Starlin Castro should take major steps forward in 2014, as the team looks to contend in the near future.

2014 Pirates Interleague Schedule

In 2014, the Pirates will take on teams from the AL East in interleague play. Pittsburgh opens up interleague play in April, when the Pirates head to Oriole Park to take on the Orioles April 29 and April 30. Baltimore will visit PNC Park later in the year, when the Pirates host the Orioles May 20 and May 21. Pittsburgh will host the Toronto Blue Jays (May 2, May 3, May 4) as well as the defending World Series champion Boston Red Sox (September 16, September 17, September 18). Pirates fans will get to watch the Bucs use a DH when Pittsburgh heads to New York to take onthe Yankees (May 16, May 17, May 18), and when they head to Tampa Bay (June 23, June 24, June 25) to take on Evan Longoria and the Rays.

The Bucs have a pair of two game series against the Tigers as well, and will host the Tigers August 11 and August 12, before headed to Detroit August 13 and August 14.

About PNC Park

PNC Park opened in 2001, and is one of baseball's best stadiums. Located on 115 Federal Street in Pittsburgh, PNC Park provides a gorgeous view of the Pittsburgh skyline beyond the outfield. PNC Park's capacity is 38,362, making it one of the more intimate stadiums today. PNC Park hosted the MLB All-Star Game in 2006, and has hosted just three playoff games since its inception -- all in 2013. Aside from baseball, PNC Park hosted Pearl Jam, Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band, The Rolling Stones and Dave Matthews Band. Jason Aldean, Miranda Lambert and Florida Georgia Line will play at PNC Park on July 26.
