About the Show:

Picnic is a 1953 drama written by William Inge. It centers on a small neighborhood's preparations for a picnic, but delves into the complex interpersonal relationships of the attendees, especially the romantic entanglement between a young man named Hal and a young lady named Madge. It debuted on Broadway at the Music Box Theatre on February 19, 1953, where it had a successful run of 477 performances. The play also won the 1953 Pulitzer Prize for drama and was the Broadway debut of acting legend Paul Newman. A 2012-13 Broadway revival by the Roundabout Theatre Company cast Maggie Grace and Sebastian Stan in the lead roles along with featured actors including Elizabeth Marvel and Ellen Burstyn. Order your Picnic tickets today and get a glimpse into a small town with big drama in this American classic.

Plot Synopsis:

On Labor Day, the whole town is preparing for a picnic. Mrs. Potts advises the timid Millie to go with Hal, and he agrees, although Madge recognizes the attraction between Hal and herself, though they both try to ignore it. While preparations for the picnic commence, each woman vies for Hal's attention, but Millie gets sick from drinking too much whiskey, Hal offends schoolteacher Rosemary by accident, and Flo joins her in berating him.

While Hal sits by himself, everyone else leaves for the picnic. Rosemary decides to go for a drive with her boyfriend instead while Madge stays behind to change her dress. When she re-emerges, she finds Hal and tries to console him, leading to a revealing interchange that ends up with the two running off and spending the night in the car. Rosemary and her boyfriend return to the house where she begs him to marry her. Meanwhile, Madge is ashamed of what she did with Hal. Though they briefly rekindle their passion, she turns him away and asks him to leave her alone.

In the morning, Flo tries to console Madge, who is crying, while everyone sees off Rosemary, who is to be married. Hal returns to talk to Madge but is forced to leave when everyone else arrives. After he leaves, she realizes her mistake and packs a suitcase to go after him.
