About the show:Peter Pan is one of the most beloved children's stories of all time. Since Sir J.M. Barrie first penned the 1904 play and the subsequent novelization, "Peter and Wendy," there have been several successful adaptations, including the successful 1953 Disney film and the smash hit musical adaptation that premiered in 1954 starring Mary Martin in the title role. Opening on October 20th at the Winter Garden Theatre on Broadway, it ran for a planned limited engagement of 152 performances, and was a financial success until it closed. It was also a critical success, earning Tony Awards for Mary Martin and Cyril Ritchard, who played Captain Hook. There have been several revivals, both on Broadway and on tour, featuring such actresses as Sandy Duncan and Cathy Rigby in the title role. The show is visually stunning, featuring ever-improving special effects and gymnastic performances that simulate flight and amaze audiences. As Mr. and Mrs. Darling are preparing for a night out, the children, Wendy, John, and Michael play with their dog, Nana. They recall that a week earlier, Nana had been startled to see a strange boy in the room. She couldn't catch him, but managed to seize his shadow, which Mrs. Darling hid away in a drawer. After they sing a lullaby and the children fall asleep, a mysterious fairy named Tinker Bell and a boy clad in green named Peter Pan fly through the nursery window. Peter finds his shadow and tries to reattach it, but can't. When he begins to cry, Wendy wakes up and sews it back on for him. Excited to have his shadow back, Peter begins telling Wendy of his life among the fairies. He tries to introduce Tinker Bell, but she is jealous of Wendy and refuses to be cordial. Peter continues to explain that he is from Neverland, where children don't grow up, but that he sometimes sits by their nursery window to hear the stories their mother tells them, which he then brings back and tells the Lost Boys, forgotten children who end up in Neverland. When Wendy offers to tell them all the stories she knows, Peter agrees to take the three siblings home with him. He sprinkles them with fairy dust and tells them to "think lovely thoughts," and soon enough, they are soaring on their way to Neverland. Act II opens in Neverland as the Lost Boys await Peter's return. Suddenly, they hear the evil Captain Hook and his pirates. Hook and his men begin to hunt the lost boys quietly, for fear of an Indian ambush, when Hook stumbles on the entrance to the Lost Boys' secret hideout. As he plans their demise, he tells his first mate, Smee, that he wants to kill Peter the most because he cut off Hook's hand and fed it to a crocodile, which now hunts Hook down to finish him off. Luckily, the croc had also swallowed a ticking clock that alerts him to its presence. Before Hook can implement his attack, the crocodile shows up, scaring the pirates away, and a group of Indians, led by the beautiful Tiger Lily, arrive and pursue the pirates. Peter and the Darlings arrive and the boys are delighted to have found a mother. When the pirates capture Tiger Lily, Peter comes to her rescue, impersonating Hook and making fools of the pirates. The Lost Boys and the Indians agree to a truce and celebrate together. John and Michael miss home and their parents, and the Lost Boys begin to wish they had parents of their own, so Wendy offers to bring them all home with her. Everyone is excited except Peter, who doesn't want to go. As the boys leave, they are, one by one, secretly captured by the pirates. Tinker Bell warns Peter of the danger and he sets off to save the day. The third act takes place aboard Captain Hook's ship, the Jolly Roger. Captain Hook revels in his victory and explains how he is furious that children hate him and love Peter Pan. He plans to have the Lost Boys walk the plank and have Wendy become the pirates' mother. But Peter is a very crafty young man, and he has got several tricks up his sleeve, including disguises, Indian friends, and a "ticked-off" crocodile.
