About the Theatre:

The Palace Theatre was erected in 1913 and quickly became one of the country's biggest venues for vaudeville entertainment. Performers aspired to book the Palace, and once they did, their careers almost universally got a boost. Some of the famous names to play there in its early days include Ed Wynn, Ethel Barrymore, Will Rogers, the Marx Brothers, Fanny Brice, Bob Hope, Sophie Tucker, Mae West, Vernon and Irene Castle, Burns and Allen, Fred Astaire, Ethel Merman, Jack Benny, Rudolph Valentino, and Bing Crosby. When the Great Depression and the decline of vaudeville came, the theatre began showing movies. Beginning in 1949, the theatre (now named the RKO Palace), tried to revive vaudeville, featuring such performers as Jerry Lewis, Frank Sinatra, Danny Kaye, Harry Belafonte, and Judy Garland. Though the format did not return to its former popularity, the theatre benefitted from the popularity of these acts. In 1966, the Palace returned to presenting legitimate theatre with the premiere production of Sweet Charity, and it continued for a time to present films and concerts by such artists as Bette Midler, Eddie Fisher, Liza Minnelli, Diana Ross, and Shirley MacLaine between theatrical engagements. In recent years, the Palace Theatre has been home to the smash hit musical Beauty and the Beast, Legally Blonde, and the 2009 revival of West Side Story. In February 2011, it welcomed the Broadway debut of the campy musical Priscilla Queen of the Desert.
