Pal Joey Information

About the Show:

Pal Joey is a classic musical with music and lyrics by the famous duo of Rodgers and Hart. It is based on John O'Hara's epistolary novel of the same name, originally published as a series of letters in The New Yorker in the 1930s. The story centers on the selfish, amoral, and yet somehow charming Joey Evans' business aspirations and romantic entanglements. Pal Joey opened on Broadway on December 25, 1940 and enjoyed a run of 374 performances. There have since been several revivals, West End productions, and special presentations. Though major theatrical awards like the Tonys didn't exist at its debut, revival productions have since been recognized.

Pal Joey has featured many legendary actors; the original Broadway cast included Gene Kelly in the title role as well as Vivienne Segal and June Havoc (sister of the famous Gypsy Rose Lee). The popular 1957 film adaptation starred Frank Sinatra and Rita Hayworth and the 2008 Broadway revival starred Stockard Channing as Vera Simpson. Additionally, several songs from the show have become standards, including "I Could Write a Book," and, most famously, "Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered." Plot Synopsis:

In late 1930s Chicago, we meet Joey Evans, a hack dancer and night club emcee who is scheming to open his own club. One day, he meets a young, beautiful, and naive girl by the name of Linda English, who he woos with tall tales and impressive lies.

Back at the club, an older, married socialite named Vera Simpson enters with some friends and Joey catches her eye. He jokingly insults her on her way out, but when she returns, he charms her in order to keep his job. They leave the club together and begin an affair.

One day, when Vera is buying joey expensive clothes, they run into Linda, who is highly upset by the sight. Meanwhile, Vera is positively elated with the arrangement. This suits Joey fine; he convinces Vera to financially back his new night club, "Chez Joey."

Shortly before the opening of Chez Joey, the chorus rehearses as Joey is interviewed by Melba, and ambitious journalist.* Gladys Bumps, a bitter chorus girl who hates Joey, plans to blackmail Vera with the help of an old boyfriend, Ludlow.** Linda, overhearing the plot, tells Vera, who in turn has the pair arrested. Linda and Vera finally conclude that Joey is a cad; Vera throws him out and closes the club. When he and Linda meet again, he shows his true colors again, brushing her off for another woman.

*In the 2008 revival version, Gladys plays a reporter in a burlesque show at Chez Joey.
**In the 2008 revival version, Joey fires Gladys, so she conspires with the club manager, Mike, to blackmail Vera. She ropes Mike into helping her by threatening to get him fired by revealing that he is gay.
